The United Nations has appointed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, as the goodwill ambassador focusing on HIV/AIDS. Her appointment was announced by the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, on Monday. The mission is to help stop new HIV infections in children and promote increased access to anti-retroviral treatment. The program aims to prevent the spread of HIV to babies and keep infected mothers alive in 22 countries, including India.
Speaking on this occasion, Aishwarya said, "I am honored to accept this appointment. Spreading awareness on health issues, especially related to women and children, has always been a priority for me. I strongly believe that every baby should be born free from HIV. And I wish that every woman living with HIV stays healthy and has access to treatment. I promise that with UNAIDS, I will do my utmost to make this happen."
